Provo Canyon School boys help rebuild home

In August 2005, boys from the Provo Canyon School, located at Utah, rebuilt a home within ten days. The home was of a 20-member family, 16 of them were from six varied countries. Two of these children were in wheelchairs, while the majority of them suffer from emotional and physical difficulties.

In May 2005, the house was damaged in a fire. Covering an area of 8000 square feet, the home required major renovation and rebuilding. Apart from the house itself, which required repair, the lawn also needed weeding.

By July, a committee for rebuilding the family's home was planned, with local volunteers, contractors and companies asked to lend a hand to complete rebuilding within ten days.

The Provo Canyon School boy's campus was approached with the idea to help. The boys were very excited and almost immediately.

The Provo Canyon boys began work on August 1. There was a time table set out for each day. 100 boys from the school worked hard and provided a much needed motivation and strength to the team.

In total, Provo Canyon School staff and students put in 1100 man-hours in renovation activities. Onlookers and spectators were amazed and appreciative of the students. By speedy work, the renovation was completed within ten days. The Provo Canyon School boys earned much praise for their efforts.

The Provo Canyon Art Program

Art covers a wide range of activities at Provo Canyon School. These include drawing, sculpture, painting, ceramics, sketching and interior designing. Arts are a mode of self-discovery for students, and a relaxing and welcome distraction from other intense activities.

The art teachers at Provo Canyon School overlook the proceedings at art class and encourage the students to do better and improve on their previous efforts. While teaching watercolor painting, the students are demonstrated the painting methods and then the students are made to practice for themselves every painting technique that they have learnt. After the students are finally comfortable and have absorbed the methods well, they can do a painting of their own by applying the techniques.

Model making are taught in two ways, there are 2D and 3D models that can be created. Whether working on pottery or sculpture, clay is a common element to both forms. The students are first demonstrated to use clay and then allowed to try for themselves as the teachers look and provide suggestions.

Nothing is considered impossible at the art classes. Students are not expected to be negative and say that a certain thing can't be done.
