The ipod has changed the way people listen to music all over the world ever since Apple launched it in 2001. The device was first brought out as an audio media player with great storing facilities. After four years of its release, Apple released a video play enabled ipod in 2005. It can also store data apart from songs and videos.
Apple has created iTunes software to enable storage and transferring music to the device. The device can play almost all music formats including MP3 and WAV. The player has a circular interface for playing, pausing, shuffling forward and backward and for menu selection.
The ipod earphones are considered to be one of the best, apart from the ear harming allegations it was levied with. The earphones have become a striking feature of the brand, with Apple changing the earphone design a few times, claiming that it provides better sound quality. The device is now available up to with 80GB storage space, that is the model ipod photo.
One of the cultures that ipod caused was the personalization of music from stereo systems to earphones and portable devices again. This was what had happened when Walkman's were first introduced. The device has also won awards, which include the most innovative audio product award.
Apart from the awards, Apple has had its share of criticism too regarding the product. The battery longevity claims of the company wee contested when Apple claimed about 14 hours of play, which was exaggerated. A website found out that the average playtime was about 8 hours. There were complaints of a weak bass and the equalizer. There were also complaints of the lifetime of the ipod; many users were claiming that the hard drives were very fragile.
The other allegation was of exploitation of workers, who were said to be working 15-hour shifts and earned no more than $150 on a monthly basis. In January 2007, it was reported that Apple made $7.1 billion in profits, of which 48% was from sale of ipods.
